Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, rust, all loose material and surface contamination. Use recommended Tikkurila products for mould removal and cleaning. Treat knots and resinous areas with Tikkurila Knotting Lacquer. Use recommended Tikkurila fillers for filling cracks, nail holes, blemishes, etc. Ensure that existing glossy, gloss painted and filled surfaces are thoroughly flatted down. Ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly prepared prior to priming and painting.
Note: Discoloration of paint especially noticeable within light colours may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc., which contain oil and water-soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings and discolour the finished surface.
Priming
Prime new bare wood overall and spot prime all bare areas on previously painted wood with Valtti Base Priming Oil. Use Pito water based primer or Oljypohja wood primer on wood that contains substances which may ‘bleed through’ and cause staining to the finished surface. Prime all bare metal and potential rust spots with Rostex Super Metal Primer.
Note: A priming coat of Valtti Base should be applied to all exterior wood which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved wood preservative.
Apply liberally on end-grain.
Application
Methods: brush or spray application.
Thinning: if necessary by up to 5% with white spirit.
Painting Conditions
All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the moisture content of the wood below 20%, the temperature of the air at least +5OC, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.
Painting
Stir the paint thoroughly and apply two coats of Valtti Teho overall.
Coverage
Smooth wood: 8-12 m2/litre per coat. Sawn wood: 4-8 m2/litre per coat. Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture, porosity and moisture content of the substrate.
Drying Times
At 23C and 50% relative humidity of the air: dry after approximately 12 hours and recoatable after 24 hours. Low temperatures and high humidity will make drying times longer.
Cleaning of Tools
Clean immediately after use with white spirit.
Maintenance
Depending on exposure and elevation, one coat of Valtti Teho is normally sufficient after 5 years.
Environmental
Empty cans should be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Liquid waste should be destroyed according to the local regulations. NOTE! Cleaning cloths or sanding dust containing the product can create fire by auto-ignition and should be stored in water before disposal, or be dried outdoors or incinerated immediately. 290
