Specifications
Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, rust, all loose material and surface contamination. Use recommended Tikkurila products for mould removal and cleaning. Treat knots and resinous areas with Tikkurila Knotting Lacquer. Use recommended Tikkurila fillers for filling cracks, nail holes, blemishes, etc. Ensure that existing glossy, gloss painted and filled surfaces are thoroughly flatted down. Ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly prepared prior to priming and painting. Make sure that timber cladding, weatherboarding and timber glazing beads, etc. are adequately fastened with non-corrosive fixings.
Note: Discoloration of paint especially noticeable within light colours may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc., which contain oil and water-soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings and discolour the finished surface.
Priming
Prime new bare wood overall and spot prime all bare areas on previously painted wood with Valtti Base Priming Oil. Use Pito Waterborne wood Primer or Oljypohja wood primer on all bare wood and on any timber that contains substances which may ‘bleed through’ and cause staining to the finished surface. Prime all bare metal and potential rust spots with Rostex Super Metal Primer.
Note: A priming coat of Valtti Base should be applied to all exterior wood which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved preservative.
Apply liberally on end-grain.
Application
Methods: brush or spray. Polyester and nylon paint brushes are best suited for the application of Valtti Opaque.
For airless spray: use a 0.018" - 0.023" spray tip.
Thinning: if necessary by up to 10% with water.
Painting conditions
All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the moisture content of the wood below 20%, the temperature of the air at least +5 deg. C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.
Painting
Stir the paint thoroughly and apply two coats of Valtti Opaque overall.
Coverage
Smooth wood: 8-10 m2/l per coat. Sawn wood: 4-8 m2/l per coat. Wet-film thickness approximately 100-250µm per coat, dry-film approximately 40-100µm per coat. Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture, porosity and moisture content of the substrate.
Drying times
At 23 deg. C and 50% relative humidity of the air: normally touch-dry in one hour and recoatable after 2 hours. Low temperatures and high humidity will make drying times longer.
Cleaning of tools
Clean with water immediately after use.
Maintenance
Depending upon exposure and elevation, one coat of Valtti Opaque is normally sufficient after 5-7 years.
Prevent environmental damage
Dry, empty sales packaging can be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Avoid spillage into drains, water systems and soil. Any product remaining unused and dried paint waste must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
