Specifications

Preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, all loose material and surface contamination. Use recommended Tikkurila products for mould removal and cleaning. Fill cracks, joints, nail holes, etc. with a good quality wood filler. Ensure that existing glossy, previously stained and filled surfaces are thoroughly flatted down so as to ensure adequate impregnation of Valtti Akvacolor in to the surface of the wood. Make sure that timber cladding, weatherboarding and timber glazing beads, etc. are adequately fastened with non-corrosive fixings. Valtti Akvacolor is not recommended for use with linseed oil putty. Good quality non-setting glazing compounds which form a protective skin should be used in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc. which contain oil and water soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings.

Priming

A priming coat of Valtti Base should be applied to all exterior wood which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved wood preservative. Apply liberally on end grain.

Application

Methods: brush or spray. For airless spray: use a 0.009" – 0.013" spray tip. Note: polyester and nylon paint brushes are best suited for the application of Valtti Akvacolor.

Painting conditions

All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the moisture content of the wood below 20%, the temperature of the air at least +5 deg. C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.

Painting

Stir thoroughly before and during use. Apply two coats of Valtti Akvacolor overall, working in the direction of the wood grain. Apply liberally on the end grain. Protect plants from splashes of Valtti Akvacolor and Valtti Base.

Coverage

Smooth wood: 8-12 m2/litre per coat. Sawn wood: 4-8 m2/litre per coat. Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture, porosity and moisture content of the substrate.

Drying times

At 23 deg. C and 50% relative humidity of the air: touch-dry after 2-3 hours and recoatable after 24 hours. Low temperature and high humidity will make drying times longer.

Cleaning of tools

Clean with water immediately after use.

Maintenance

Depending upon exposure and elevation, two coats of Valtti Akvacolor are normally sufficient after 3-5 years.

Prevent environmental damage

Empty cans should be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Liquid waste should be destroyed according to the local regulations.
