Description

Quick drying anti-corrosive primer for use on interior and exterior metal substrates. Suitable for priming surfaces subjected to heavier stress than usual and where the adhesion of normal alkyd primers is insufficient.

Examples of use

Steel, zinc-coated sheet metal, roughened aluminium surfaces, etc., and as a primer for alkyd and waterborne paints.

Specifications

Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, water soluble salts, white rust, rust (to St2 degree), all loose material and surface contamination. Use recommended Tikkurila products as cleaning agents and for mould removal. Ensure that existing glossy and gloss painted surfaces are thoroughly flatted down. Roughen aluminium surfaces before priming. When possible prime new zinccoated surfaces after a period of weathering for one year.

Application

Methods: brush or spray.
For airless spray: use a 0.015” – 0.021” spray tip.
Thinning: if necessary by up to 15% with Tikkurila Thinner 1120.

Painting Conditions

The surface to be painted must be dry, the temperature of the air at least +5OC, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%. The temperature of the surface to be painted should not exceed +35OC otherwise solvent evaporation may occur too quickly resulting in loss of adhesion, blistering, etc.

Painting

Stir the paint thoroughly. Prime unpainted surfaces overall and spot prime all bare areas on previously painted surfaces with Rostex Super Metal Primer. The recommended dry film thickness for a single coat is 40-60μm.

Coverage

10 m2/litre per coat. Wet-film thickness approximately 100 μm per coat, dry film approximately 45 μm per coat. Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture of the substrate and method of application.

Drying Times

At 23OC and 50% relative humidity of the air: normally dust-dry after ½ hour and recoatable with alkyd paints after 2 hours, waterborne paints after 24 hours.

Cleaning of tools

Clean tools immediately after use with Tikkurila Thinner 1120.

Environmental

Empty cans should be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Liquid waste should be destroyed according to the local regulations.
