Description
Waterborne sheen finish, special alkyd-reinforced acrylic paint for use on exterior facades. Finngard Opaque offers superb weather resistance, anti-carbonation properties, flexibility and an extremely durable finish which protects against attack from chemical and biological erosion and ensures low maintenance.
Examples of use
New or previously painted exterior facades including roughcast, pebbledash, concrete, cement rendering, building blocks and boards and previously primed wood and metal. Finngard Opaque is not recommended for use on substrates previously coated with lime paint.

Colour range
Available in white, the complete Tikkurila Professional and Façade Colour Ranges, plus most of the British Standard, RAL and NCS Colour Ranges.Note: Colour shades will not fully develop until the paint is completely dry.
Specifications
Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, salts, all loose material and surface contamination. Use recommended Tikkurila products for mould removal and cleaning. Ensure that surfaces to be painted are bonded to the substrates. Re-render or repair all areas of failure, cracks, holes, etc., with either a suitable Tikkurila repair mortar or cement mortar. (Use only recommended concrete repair products for repairing concrete.) Polished or glassy concrete surfaces should be mechanically abraded. Glossy and gloss painted surfaces should be thoroughly flatted down.Note: The relative humidity of concrete and cement-rich substrates should be less than 90% prior to priming and painting.
Priming
Prime all new and old unpainted concrete and cement rendered substrates with Finngard Primer S. Prime all previously painted concrete and cement rendered surfaces that are in poor condition (i.e. porous or friable) with Finngard Primer S. Prime very absorbent surfaces with Finngard Primer S using wet-on-wet method of application. Prime all bare wood with Otex Adhesion Primer or Oljypohja wood primer and bare metal with Rostex Super Metal Primer.
Application
Methods: brush, roller or spray application. Polyester and nylon paint brushes are best suited for the application of Finngard Opaque. For airless spray use a : 0.018" - 0.023" spray tip. Thinning: if necessary for brush and roller application thin by up to 5% with water and for spray application by up to 10% with water.
Painting conditions
All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the temperature of the air at least +5 deg. C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.
Painting
Stir the paint thoroughly and apply two coats of Finngard Opaque overall.
Coverage
- Smooth surfaces: 6-8m2/litre per coat
- Rough surfaces: 3.5-5m2/litre per coat
- Wet-film thickness approximately 125-280mm per coat
- Dry-film thickness approximately 40-100mm per coat
- Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture, porosity and application method
Drying times
At 23 deg. C and 50% relative humidity of the air: normally touch-dry in one hour and recoatable after two hours. Low temperatures and high humidity will make drying times longer.
Cleaning of tools
Clean with water immediately after use.
Maintenance
Depending upon exposure and elevation one coat of Finngard Opaque is normally sufficient after 15 years.
Prevent environmental damage
Empty cans should be recycled or disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Liquid waste should be destroyed according to the local regulations for hazardous waste.
